Germany delays decision on Taurus missile transfer to Ukraine: MoD states
The German government has not yet decided to transfer long-range Taurus missiles with a range of up to 500 kilometers to Ukrainian forces, according to a statement made by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius in an interview with Bild.
The official reminded that Germany had already provided Ukraine with Leopard battle tanks and modern IRIS-T air defense systems. At the same time, the country ranked second in the world in terms of military support to Ukraine.
"The duty of the entire German government is to very carefully consider each weapons delivery. It is necessary to clarify numerous political, legal, military, and technical aspects. This is not easy. The German government has not yet decided whether to send Taurus cruise missiles," said Pistorius.
According to him, the German government is currently in negotiations with Ukraine regarding the conditions of using Taurus, including the task of striking only on Ukrainian territory and the deployment of missiles, which may require assistance from the Bundeswehr.
Transfer of Taurus to Ukraine
In recent months, discussions about the supply of Taurus missiles to Ukraine have been taking place in Germany. Ukraine needs such weaponry to strike at the rear positions of Russian occupiers.
On September 15, Pistorius mentioned that a decision on the transfer could be made within one to two weeks.
However, in the Bundestag, it was stated that the supply was only being blocked by Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
