German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said that Berlin and Washington share "the same goal" regarding Iran, particularly on nuclear weapons and the Strait of Hormuz, reports CNN.
Minister Wadephul posted that he had held a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi earlier today. During the conversation, the German diplomat stressed that Berlin supports resolving the issue through negotiations.
"As a close US ally, we share the same goal: Iran must completely and verifiably renounce nuclear weapons and immediately open the Strait of Hormuz," Wadephul wrote, describing what he told his Iranian counterpart.
The outlet notes that these remarks align Germany more closely with the United States amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
Earlier, the media reported that US President Donald Trump said Washington plans to withdraw far more than the initial 5,000 American troops from Germany previously announced by the Pentagon.
This followed comments by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who said the United States lacks a strategy to end the war and claimed Washington is being humiliated by Iranian leadership.
Iran proposes US new peace deal
The reports emerged yesterday that Iran had submitted a new version of a peace proposal to the United States aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the blockade on both sides. The plan reportedly envisions the immediate resumption of shipping but postpones negotiations on Iran's nuclear program indefinitely.
Shortly afterward, US President Donald Trump confirmed that Washington had received the proposal. However, before reviewing it in detail, he expressed skepticism that the terms would be acceptable.
