Germany and Canada to acquire 17 anti-submarine aircraft P-8A Poseidon
The Boeing company has been awarded a contract worth $3.4 billion for the manufacturing and delivery of 17 multi-mission maritime aircraft P-8A for Canada and Germany, according to the Pentagon's website.
It is specified that Canada will receive 14 aircraft, while Germany will receive only three aircraft. The airplanes will be manufactured in Seattle, Washington, as well as at several facilities in California, Arizona, and Alabama. It is expected that the customers will receive their aircraft by March 2028.
As of the end of 2023, Germany currently has five aircraft, and these will be the first of this model for Canada. The United States has the largest fleet with 100 aircraft, and an additional 28 are still in production.
What is known about the P-8A Poseidon
The Boeing P-8 Poseidon is an anti-submarine and maritime patrol aircraft developed to replace the Lockheed P-3 Orion. It is designed for detecting and eliminating enemy submarines in patrol areas, as well as for reconnaissance, participation in anti-ship operations, and search and rescue operations in both coastal regions and the World Ocean.
It is emphasized that the Boeing P-8 Poseidon can carry up to nine tons of weaponry, with five internal and six external hardpoints for various types of armaments such as torpedoes, naval mines, and aerial bombs.
It was previously reported that Canada plans to acquire up to 16 modern military reconnaissance aircraft. For this purpose, the country officially requested information and proposals from the US government.
