German opposition calls for Bundestag vote on transferring Taurus to Ukraine
The German opposition party Christian Democratic Union is pushing for a vote in the Bundestag on the issue of transferring long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine, says the leader of the CDU faction, Friedrich Merz.
According to him, CDU deputies in the Bundestag want to propose a parliament resolution tomorrow, January 17, that would provide Taurus missiles to Ukraine.
The vote is expected to take place after a report by the authorized representative on defense matters, Eva Högl of the Social Democratic Party of Germany.
"We believe that the situation in Ukraine is becoming increasingly critical," stated Merz.
According to him, Ukrainian forces allegedly currently have no prospects of repelling Russian troops. However, the Taurus cruise missiles could assist the Armed Forces of Ukraine in changing this situation.
He also called on members of the German government to support such an initiative.
Taurus for Ukraine
Recall that Ukraine requested long-range Taurus missiles from Germany, capable of destroying targets up to 500 kilometers away, last year.
At the same time, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz opposed the idea. He is concerned that Ukraine could use such weaponry to launch missile strikes on Russian territory.
It was previously reported that due to Scholz's position on this issue, he is facing increasing political pressure.
