German government rejects opposition's call to send jets to Ukraine
Germany does not currently plan to provide Ukraine with fighter jets as part of military aid, states Federal government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit.
He says that the German government does not support the call from the leader of the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz, to start supplying fighter jets to Ukraine.
"There is no point in delivering different types of fighter jets to Ukraine, regardless of the question of who can supply such aircraft at all," Hebestreit noted.
It should be noted that Germany does not have F-16s in its arsenal. The German forces use Eurofighter Typhoon multirole fighters.
Background
Merz's call for fighter jets became known yesterday, July 14. He explained that Ukraine needs to protect its skies from Russian air attacks.
By the way, a few months ago, the Swedish authorities stated that they had suspended plans to transfer their Gripen fighters to Ukraine. The reason, they said, is that Ukraine is currently focused on obtaining F-16s.
At the same time, Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Ihor Zhovkva noted that negotiations regarding Gripen with Sweden are still ongoing.
