German government approves budget for 2025 with half less aid for Ukraine
The German government has approved the budget for the next year. According to the previously approved budget, half as much money was allocated to help Ukraine, according to Spiegel.
The German government has approved a budget to stimulate the economy. The draft will be submitted to the Bundestag for consideration.
Germany's planned budget expenditures amount to €480.6 billion, with new borrowings of €43.8 billion in 2025.
The budget draft includes an increase in defense spending by €1.3 billion, bringing it to €53 billion. This is less than Germany's Defense Minister Boris Pistorius expected. The German parliament is anticipated to continue discussions on defense during the review process.
The Bundestag will begin considering the draft in September. Parliament will likely approve an additional budget for the current year on November 8 and the budget for next year on November 29. Until then, lawmakers may make amendments.
Previously, media reports indicated that the German government plans to allocate €4 billion in aid to Ukraine in 2025. This is half the amount of 2024, when Berlin directed a record €8 billion.
It was also reported that Germany's Ministry of Defense requested additional funds from the government to finance aid to Ukraine.
