German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, during a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing, called on China to use its influence and support international efforts to end the war in Ukraine as soon as possible, the website of China's Foreign Ministry reported.
According to the ministry, during the talks the parties exchanged their positions on the so-called Ukrainian crisis — the term used by official Beijing to describe Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Wadephul outlined Berlin's approach and expressed hope that China would help end the war by using its influence with Russia.
In response, Wang Yi emphasized China's "consistent position" on the Ukrainian issue. According to him, all parties must maintain the current momentum toward a political settlement, meet each other halfway, and work toward achieving a "fair, lasting, and binding" peace agreement through dialogue.
The Chinese minister also stated that Beijing supports any initiatives aimed at peace and will continue to play a "constructive role."
Germany has not yet published its communiqué following the talks.
As is known, China declares neutrality in Russia's war against Ukraine and avoids identifying the aggressor and the victim. After several unsuccessful attempts to act as a mediator, Beijing effectively stepped back from active efforts, focusing instead on political calls for de-escalation and dialogue.
Recently, Beijing stated that maintaining good-neighborly relations among China, India, and Russia serves the interests of the peoples of these countries and contributes to peace and stability worldwide.
