On the night of Monday, December 15, the Defense Forces of Ukraine struck the Astrakhan gas processing plant. Explosions and a large-scale fire were reported on its premises, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Special Operations Forces (SSO) on Telegram.

"In order to reduce the enemy’s capacity to produce explosives, on the night of December 15, the Defense Forces of Ukraine successfully struck a strategic enemy facility — the Astrakhan Gas Processing Plant," the General Staff wrote.

As a result of the attack, explosions and a large-scale fire were recorded on the premises of the Astrakhan GPP.

The SSO reported that the Russian facility was struck jointly with the Unmanned Systems Forces.

"On the night of December 15, 2025, 'deep strike' units of the Special Operations Forces, in coordination with the Unmanned Systems Forces, struck the Astrakhan Gas Processing Plant, owned by Gazprom and located in the Astrakhan region near the Caspian Sea," the statement said.

It is noted that the Astrakhan GPP is one of the key enterprises of Russia’s oil and gas industry. It processes natural gas and gas condensate into gasoline, diesel fuel, and fuel oil, which are subsequently used for military purposes.

Each year, the plant produces up to 3.5 million tonnes of sulfur, which is used by Russia’s military-industrial complex to manufacture explosives.

Strikes on Russia’s oil industry

On the night of December 13, drones attacked an oil refinery in Saratov, Russia. It is reported that the refinery had only recently resumed operations.

The day before, the Defense Forces of Ukraine struck the Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery in Russia’s Yaroslavl region. Strikes were also carried out on an ammunition depot and enemy concentrations in Donetsk.

On the night of December 6, units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck targets critical for Russian troops in Russia’s Ryazan region and in temporarily occupied areas of the Luhansk region.
