G7 leaders will not issue a joint statement on the war in Ukraine due to opposition from the US, according to CBC News and Reuters.

According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, the US does not agree with harsh wording regarding Russia's actions in Ukraine and wants it to be softened.

"The Americans did not want some of the pointed remarks about Russia to be included in the joint statement because they feared it would compromise negotiations with that country over ending their war," the post quotes the source as saying.

It was noted that some points concerning Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine will be included in the statement by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

He was expected to publish a statement calling for increased pressure on Russia through sanctions and announcing that the G7 supports peace efforts led by the US.

According to a European official, the Big Seven leaders emphasized their plans to take a tough stance on Russia in conversation with US President Donald Trump; however, the White House chief made it clear that he does not want to impose sanctions.

G7 Summit in Canada

On June 16, the G7 summit began in the Canadian province of Alberta with the participation of leaders from the US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the EU, and the UK. The main topics were the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and security in the Indo-Pacific region.

US President Donald Trump left the summit early due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

During the meeting, G7 leaders were unable to convince US President Donald Trump to strengthen sanctions against Russia.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the next summit will take place in 2026 in the Alpine resort town of Évian-les-Bains.
