G7 ambassadors react positively to Zelenskyy's push for NABU and SAPO independence

G7 ambassadors welcomed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's decision on the new NABU and SAPO bill, according to G7 ambassadors.
"G7 ambassadors welcome the president's commitment to swiftly restore and ensure the independence of anti-corruption institutions. Further progress on anti-corruption and rule-of-law reforms is a public demand, a prerequisite for EU integration, and essential for the business climate," the statement said.
At the same time, the ambassadors noted they would closely follow the situation and developments, and look forward to the swift adoption of the bill by the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament.
Bill on NABU and SAPO
Earlier this week, the Verkhovna Rada effectively reduced the powers of NABU and SAPO by passing a controversial law. EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos responded to the parliament's decision, calling it a serious step backward. At the time, G7 ambassadors also expressed concern.
Zelenskyy's bill
On July 24, President Zelenskyy submitted a new bill to the Verkhovna Rada aimed at ensuring the independence of NABU and SAPO and preventing Russian influence over anti-corruption institutions.
The draft law stipulates that NABU employees and members of several other law enforcement agencies with access to state secrets must undergo a polygraph test at least once every two years.
