At the start of the full-scale war, the ratio of artillery strength was 5:1 in favor of the enemy. Today, there are fronts where the artillery of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) surpasses Russia’s by a factor of three, according to Nazar Voloshyn, spokesperson for the Khortytsia operational and strategic group of troops.

“At the beginning of the hostilities, the ratio was 5:1 in favor of Russia. Now, on certain fronts, the advantage in artillery shell use and artillery overall is on our side, ranging from 1.5:1 to even 3:1,” Voloshyn stated.

The spokesperson added that Russian forces tend to use artillery indiscriminately over large areas, while Ukraine's Defense Forces target specific objectives. As a result, the enemy is losing its artillery advantage but is trying to compensate with increased use of aviation.

Artillery ammunition for Ukraine

As reported by Sky News, Russia’s ability to dominate the battlefield with artillery has significantly declined. However, Russian forces are attempting to make up for this with aerial bombs.

According to Colonel Serhiy Musienko, deputy commander of the Missile Forces and Artillery of the AFU, in 2023, Ukraine’s Defense Forces used 3 million shells on the frontlines, half of which were 155-mm caliber.

In mid-November, Josep Borrell, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, stated that the EU had delivered the promised one million rounds of ammunition to Ukraine.
