Freeland may enter race for Canadian Prime Minister, CBC News reports
Former Canadian Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland is expected to announce her intention to run for the leadership of the Liberal Party within the week. If elected, she would automatically replace Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister, according to CBC News.
Freeland plans to make an official statement before US President-elect Donald Trump is sworn in next Monday, January 20.
Freeland resigned from the cabinet in December following policy disagreements with Trudeau. After that, calls for Trudeau's resignation intensified.
In a subsequent social media post, Freeland explained that she had no other choice, as the Prime Minister offered her the position of minister without portfolio with limited responsibility for US-Canada relations.
She also criticized Trudeau’s economic policies, condemning what she called "costly political gimmicks" and urging closer collaboration with provincial premiers to counter tariffs on Canadian goods proposed by Trump.
Last week, Justin Trudeau announced his plans to resign amid an escalating crisis that has caused him to lose support within his Liberal Party.
However, Trudeau will remain as interim Prime Minister until the party selects a new leader. The Liberals are now searching for a candidate capable of leading the party against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. His party is in opposition but has high ratings and every chance of winning the next federal elections in the fall.
