France calls on UN to take action against Russian atrocities in Ukraine

France has called on the UN Security Council to condemn Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and violations of international humanitarian law. Paris demands that Moscow cease its attacks and comply with the UN Charter, states France’s permanent representative to the UN, Jérôme Bonnafont, during a Security Council meeting.
During the UN Security Council meeting, Bonnafont stated that the Council must condemn Russia’s violations of international humanitarian law, call on Russia to put an end to these actions, and remind Moscow of its obligations under the UN Charter.
France directly accused Russia of seeking to subjugate Ukraine
According to Bonnafont, regardless of Kremlin rhetoric, its true and sole objective remains the domination of Ukraine.
The French representative emphasized that Russia continues to obstruct the ceasefire agreement, which Ukraine accepted over 100 days ago. In his view, the recent intense shelling of Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities proves Russia’s unwillingness to achieve peace.
Bonnafont also noted that Moscow is currently making demands that essentially amount to capitulation.
“Russia seeks to use the escalation in the Middle East to divert attention from its own aggression,” the diplomat asserted.
Call to action sounded
France urged the UN Security Council not to stand aside but to properly condemn Russia’s actions undermining the international order.
Bonnafont emphasized that no global crisis should overshadow the fact that Russia is violating the UN Charter, challenging international borders, and threatening European security and global stability.
On the night of June 17, Russian forces launched missile and drone attacks on Kyiv’s Solomyanskyi district. The assault claimed 23 lives.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting in response to Russia’s attacks on civilians. He urged increased pressure on the aggressor and stronger support for Ukraine, including additional air defense capabilities.
