France believes China can bring Russia to negotiating table

France believes that China could influence Russia, particularly by persuading Moscow to engage in negotiations regarding the war in Ukraine, Le Figaro reports, citing French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot.
The French Foreign Minister is currently visiting Beijing to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and China. During his visit, he met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
At a joint press conference, Barrot emphasized that Paris and Beijing "must coordinate efforts to promote a just and lasting peace in Ukraine." He also expressed confidence that China could influence Russia to engage in serious negotiations.
"China also has a role to play in persuading Russia to come to the negotiating table with serious and good-faith proposals," said the French Foreign Minister.
However, China’s Foreign Ministry did not mention Ukraine in its official press release following the meeting. Instead, Beijing highlighted discussions on China-EU relations, economic cooperation, and climate issues.
'Friendship' between China and Russia
China officially claims to be neutral in Russia's war against Ukraine, stating that it does not provide military assistance to either side. However, Chinese companies continue to supply Russia with dual-use goods.
Furthermore, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping maintain close ties. Putin last visited China in May 2024, and economic cooperation between the two countries is growing.
