Foreign Minister reacts to Macron's proposal on western troops in Ukraine: Time-saving strategy for Europe
The debate sparked by French President Emmanuel Macron's idea of deploying Western troops in Ukraine will save time for Europe. More needs to be done not only to protect Ukraine but also Europe itself, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.
The Minister noted that Macron's statement was not a surprise for Ukraine. According to the Foreign Minister, it appears that Paris is the first European capital to publicly acknowledge the obvious, while other countries are concerned about this fact.
"But the discussion provoked by this message from Paris will save Europe a lot of time in realizing that more needs to be done. Not only for Ukraine, but also for Europe," Kuleba said.
He emphasized that in many European capitals, there is still no understanding that assistance to Ukraine is not charity but the saving of their own citizens' lives, saving significant costs that would otherwise go towards their own defense.
"This message from Macron is what everyone knows but is afraid to say. He is simply the first to start talking openly about what I think every reasonable person in Europe needs to understand. If Russia is not stopped in Ukraine, there will be war in Europe," the Foreign Minister stated.
Macron's idea of deploying troops
French President Emmanuel Macron did not rule out that NATO could deploy troops to assist Ukraine. The main problem, according to him, is the lack of consensus on this issue at the moment.
Several NATO countries have opposed this idea, including Germany, Czechia, Bulgaria, Poland, Spain, and Italy.
However, there are countries willing to consider such a possibility, such as Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
In France, it was explained that there is currently no talk of sending ground troops to Ukraine. But Macron does consider this possibility in the event of Russian advances on Kyiv or Odesa.
