Republicans have won special elections for two key US House seats in Florida, keeping control of the districts, reports The Guardian.

In Florida's special elections, Randy Fine defeated Josh Weil in Mike Waltz’s former district, while Jimmy Patronis won the seat previously held by Matt Gaetz. Although both districts are traditionally Republican, Democrats managed to narrow the gap this time.

Democratic candidate Josh Weil, a public school teacher, put up a strong fight on the eastern coast despite the Republican dominance in the region. He raised more funds than Fine, and polls leading up to the election indicated a neck-and-neck race. Despite the loss, Weil secured significantly more votes than Democrats in these districts during last November’s elections.

"The American people sent a clear message: they want leaders who support President Trump’s agenda," said Michael Whatley, chair of the Republican National Committee.

Parties react to the election outcomes

President Donald Trump, who endorsed both Republican candidates, celebrated the victories on social media, calling them proof of his strong influence:

"The Trump endorsement, as always, proved far greater than the Democrats' forces of evil. Congratulations to America!!!"

Meanwhile, Democratic National Committee chair Ken Martin described the reduced margin as a sign of the party's impressive performance even in Republican areas. He emphasized that Democrats are confidently moving toward a congressional majority in 2026.

Democrats are strengthening their position in other states: Democratic candidate Susan Crawford secured a victory in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election, defeating Republican Brad Schimel, who was backed by Trump and Elon Musk.
