The United States will assume the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council in the coming days. However, the meeting will be chaired by the president’s spouse for the first time, whereas such sessions are typically led by the country’s ambassador or a senior government official holding the rotating presidency.
"Melania Trump will chair the Security Council for the first time as US first lady, on the very first day of America’s presidency of the body. Let’s make the UN great again," he wrote.
The Office of the First Lady said Trump’s remarks will focus on the role of education in promoting tolerance and peace worldwide.
"Mrs. Trump’s leadership will mark the first time a sitting US First Lady presides over the Security Council as members consider education, technology, peace, and security," the office added.
Reuters, citing a UN official, also reported that this will mark the first time the spouse of a sitting world leader chairs a meeting of the 15-member Security Council.
Melania Trump calls on Russia to return Ukrainian children
In 2025, Melania Trump sent a letter to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin asking for the return of Ukrainian children taken by Russia during the full-scale war.
In late January 2026, she said in a broadcast that she had received a response from Putin, adding that her representative remains in contact with the Russian side and work on returning the children continues.
That contact has produced results. In early December, six boys and one girl were returned to Ukraine and reunited with their families.
On February 12, Melania Trump helped secure the return of another group of children taken from Ukraine. The White House did not disclose the number but said it was the third time children were returned with her involvement.
