Fires, destruction and mass evacuations in Odesa after deadly strike

On the night of June 20, Russian forces launched a massive drone attack on Odesa. The assault caused fires, destruction, and civilian casualties, according to the Ukrainian State Emergency Service (DSNS).
In total, over 10 drone strikes hit the city, sparking large-scale fires.
One four-story building was completely engulfed in flames. Emergency workers rescued three people and evacuated six more.
However, during firefighting and rescue operations, building structures collapsed on the rescuers, injuring three firefighters, who are now hospitalized in stable condition.
"A 23-story residential building was hit - floors 18, 19, and 20 caught fire. 600 people were evacuated. Three people, including two children, were rescued from a blocked apartment," the statement said.
In addition, five other residential buildings and three vehicles caught fire.
The DSNS added that a Point of Invincibility has been set up at the site of a partially destroyed building. Residents reported that another person may still be inside, and search-and-rescue operations are ongoing.
"In total, 13 people were injured, including three rescuers. DSNS personnel and volunteers continue to work at the scene," officials summarized.
Russian attacks on Odesa
Odesa is regularly targeted by Russian forces, who often use drones and sometimes various types of missiles.
For example, on the morning of June 17, Russia attacked civilian infrastructure with drones. The strike destroyed residential buildings and damaged a kindergarten, an inclusive education center, garages, and other structures. Fires also broke out in several locations.
That attack killed two people and injured 19 others.
