Finland has joined a naval coalition aimed at supporting the Ukrainian Navy, according to the Finnish Ministry of Defense.
"Finland joins coalitions to strengthen military capabilities based on careful consideration of each case, always ensuring that our contribution is sufficient, effective, and brings clear added value to enhancing Ukraine's military potential," emphasized Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen.
The Ministry of Defense noted that Finland has already joined coalitions on artillery, armored vehicles, demining, and information technology.
The goal of these international capability-building coalitions is to provide long-term support to Ukraine. The coalitions work jointly with Ukraine to plan and guide the development of the Armed Forces’ future capabilities.
Naval coalition
In December 2023, the UK and Norway created a new naval coalition to support Ukraine with ships and transport assets to strengthen its maritime combat capabilities.
The coalition also provides long-term support through training, equipment, and infrastructure development to enhance security in the Black Sea.
At the time, UK Defense Minister Grant Shapps stated that the coalition would help coordinate partner support and, in the long run, assist Ukraine in modernizing its naval fleet. This would make it more interoperable with Western allies and NATO standards, while also improving security in the Black Sea.
