Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that he will not support the European Commission’s proposal to provide Ukraine with a reparations loan from frozen Russian assets if the funds are intended for defense purposes, according to politic's X.
Fico said that he sent an official letter to the President of the European Council, António Costa, warning that Slovakia would block any EU decisions on financing military support for Ukraine in 2026–2027.
According to the Slovak prime minister, the conflict in Ukraine has no military solution, and the EU’s strategy to assist Kyiv is wrong and ineffective. He emphasized that he will not vote for allocating funds to the war, citing his peace policy.
The head of the Slovak government also praised the peace initiatives of US President Donald Trump, stating that using Russian assets for defense purposes could allegedly undermine American plans for Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.
In his speech, he criticized Ukraine, mentioning corruption scandals and the suspension of gas transit. According to him, the latter has caused losses for Slovakia.
At the same time, the politician emphasized that his government remains a responsible partner on humanitarian issues: the country has taken in around 200,000 Ukrainian refugees and is working on new infrastructure projects.
Fico also confirmed support for Ukraine’s EU accession but noted that skepticism is growing among member states regarding Kyiv’s rapid progress on this path.
Earlier, Fico stated that Slovakia would not send its military to Ukraine as part of security guarantees. However, Bratislava is ready to provide logistical support to Ukraine and European forces.
At the same time, Slovakia has expressed support for the US peace plan for Ukraine.
