Family of five killed in Ukrainian city of Odesa as flood wave sweeps through

As a result of the heavy rain that hit the Ukrainian city of Odesa on September 30, a family of five was killed, according to the spokesperson of the State Emergency Service in the Odesa region, Maryna Averina, who announced this during a national TV marathon.
According to her, one of the most tragic incidents was the death of a family of five who lived in a basement-level apartment.
"A wave covered them, and they could not get out. The entire family died," Averina said.
In addition, three women who were walking along the road also died. As the spokesperson clarified, they were swept by a wave and carried away by the current. All the victims were residents of Odesa.
The bad weather also affected Chornomorsk, but the most severe consequences of the disaster were recorded in the regional center.
At night, rescuers carried out a significant amount of work, in particular evacuating people from flooded areas.
"In some places, the water was above chest level, and there we transported people to evacuation buses," she added.
The city authorities clarified that in Serhii Eisenstein Lane, the bodies of five victims were found: two men, two women, and a girl about 8 years old.
"Their identities are currently being established. Rescuers do not yet have access to the bodies — the operation to pump water out of the premises is ongoing," the statement said.
Bad weather in Ukraine
Today, adverse weather conditions have affected several regions of Ukraine. There were reports of flooding and power supply issues.
Odesa was the most affected by the heavy rain — a red danger level was declared there, all public transport was suspended, and schools and kindergartens were switched to remote learning.
Later, the State Emergency Service released photos of the aftermath and reported on the victims in the city.
