In Odesa and the Odesa region, rescuers have been working for almost 24 hours to deal with the aftermath of flooding caused by heavy rains. The bad weather claimed the lives of 9 people, including a child, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

Throughout the night, rescuers helped evacuate people from water traps, remove cars, and pump water out of buildings.

At around 7 a.m. Kyiv time, a girl who had gone missing the day before was found. A psychologist from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine also worked at the search site.

In total, 362 people were rescued and 227 vehicles were evacuated.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine deployed 255 rescuers and 68 pieces of equipment.

Rescuers released photos and videos of the rescue of city residents.

Odesa in water trap

On Tuesday, September 30, a number of regions in Ukraine were hit by heavy rain and wind.

As a result of the bad weather, almost 2 months' worth of rainfall fell in Odesa in just under 7 hours. Storm drains and sewers are physically unable to cope with such a flow of water.

A red alert was declared in the city. Public transport was suspended, and schools switched to remote learning.

The Odesa City Council advises against traveling around the city without urgent need, especially by car, during the first half of Wednesday, October 1.
