Ukraine's Defense Minister Rustem Umerov met with his Belgian counterpart Theo Francken. They discussed defense cooperation between Ukraine and Belgium, Umerov reports on his official Facebook page.

"Had a meeting with Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken and congratulated him on his appointment. He faces serious challenges, and I appreciate his willingness to continue supporting Ukraine and our Armed Forces," the Minister of Defense of Ukraine stated.

During the conversation, Umerov and Francken discussed strengthening Ukraine’s Air Force, particularly the F-16 program and its further implementation. They also talked about the opportunities of localizing aircraft maintenance in Ukraine, as well as the training of Ukrainian pilots and technical personnel.

The ministers also focused on air defense issues, particularly on enhancing the protection of Ukrainian airspace. They discussed the supply and localization of air defense systems production in Ukraine, new joint defense projects, and their financing.

Belgium’s support

Belgium has been providing assistance to Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale war. Recently, the two countries signed a security guarantee agreement.

According to the document, Brussels will provide at least €977 million in military aid this year. It also specified the exact number of F-16s that Ukraine will receive from its ally by 2028.
