Ukraine and Belgium have signed a security guarantee agreement, marking the 11th such treaty for Kyiv, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"Today in Brussels, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and I signed a bilateral security and long-term support agreement between Ukraine and Belgium," Zelenskyy writes.

The document includes at least €977 million in Belgian military aid to Ukraine this year, as well as Belgium's commitment to providing our country with support over the course of the agreement's ten-year term.

"For the first time, such an agreement specifies the exact number of F-16 fighter jets - 30 - that will be delivered to Ukraine until 2028, with the first arriving already this year," Zelenskyy added.

The agreement guarantees timely security assistance to Belgium, modern armored vehicles, equipment to meet the needs of Ukraine's Air Force and Air Defense, naval security, demining, participation in an artillery munitions coalition, and military training.

The document also envisages defense industrial cooperation, support for Ukraine's peace formula, increased sanctions against Russia, compensation for damages, justice for the aggressor, the use of frozen Russian assets, and economic recovery.

Ukraine and Belgium will also deepen their cooperation in the fields of intelligence, cybersecurity, and countering disinformation. Belgium also expresses support for Ukraine's future membership in the EU and NATO.

"I thank Prime Minister De Croo, his government, and all Belgians for their unwavering and long-lasting support for Ukraine," Zelenskyy added.

Security guarantees

Since the beginning of 2024, Ukraine has signed bilateral security agreements with 10 countries, with discussions on such documents starting in 2023.

These agreements will provide support to Ukraine in the defense sector and beyond. Kyiv seeks to receive assistance in the current war and in case of possible future Russian aggression.

The day before, Zelenskyy signed a security agreement with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
