European Parliament opposes any attempts to force Ukraine’s capitulation for peace deal

The European Parliament has adopted a resolution in support of Ukraine's defense. In the resolution, MEPs opposed any attempts to force Kyiv into capitulation for the sake of a peace agreement, according to the press service of the European Parliament.
In the resolution, adopted on March 12, the European Parliament stated that the EU is Ukraine’s key strategic ally and must assist it in defending its right to self-defense.
MEPs welcomed the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire. They expect Russia to agree to it and halt all attacks on Ukraine's civilian population, infrastructure, and territory.
Support for Ukraine and strengthening its defense
The resolution states that the EU and its member states have become Ukraine's key strategic allies and must maintain their role as the largest donor. To support Ukraine's right to self-defense, EU countries must significantly increase their aid to Ukraine.
Furthermore, the European Parliament called on the EU to ensure reliable security guarantees for Ukraine to deter further Russian aggression.
"The country must be empowered to reject hasty deals that weaken its security in the mid- and long-term and risk subjecting it and other European countries to renewed Russian aggression in the future. MEPs are deeply opposed to any attempts to blackmail Ukraine’s leadership into surrendering for the sole purpose of facilitating a so-called ‘peace deal’," the resolution states.
The MEPs also emphasized that European security negotiations are impossible without the participation of the EU. They welcomed the creation of a "coalition of the willing" for potential European oversight of the implementation of a future peace agreement.
The resolution was adopted with 442 votes in favor, 98 against, and 126 abstentions.
It is worth noting that on March 11, the European Parliament held a debate on the EU's defense capabilities and support for Ukraine. During the session, European Council President António Costa emphasized that the security of Europe and Ukraine are inseparably linked.
In this context, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reminded of the new ReArm Europe plan. The European Union is beginning to implement a €800 billion rearmament plan to strengthen security. According to her, this decision could serve as the foundation for the creation of a European Defense Union.
