Europe is currently facing its most difficult and dangerous situation since World War II. The current threats are more serious than during the Cold War, according to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

"I think it is serious. I think the war in Ukraine is very serious. When I look at Europe today, I think we are in the most difficult and dangerous situation since the end of the second world war – not the cold war," she says at the EU leaders' summit in Copenhagen.

Frederiksen calls on European countries to "leave our national perspective talking about security in Europe, and look at the pattern."

Drone threat and response

Frederiksen also comments on the problem of drone incursions. According to her, she generally supports their destruction, but on the condition that "it has to be done in the right way."

The Danish authorities have previously tightened security measures in response to the growing number of incidents involving drones. The issue of protecting critical infrastructure remains a priority.

Parallels with interwar period

Responding to questions from journalists, the Prime Minister draws parallels between the interwar period and the present day. She stresses that the past cannot provide ready-made solutions, but lessons can be learned.

Frederiksen notes that Europe needs to reindustrialize and increase arms production. This, she says, is necessary so that democracies can defend themselves against those who do not want freedom.

In Copenhagen this week, EU leaders will discuss projects that could change the continent's defense architecture.

Joint exercise called Wings of Defense has begun in Denmark, where Ukrainian military personnel are working with Danish forces to practice repelling attacks by Russian strike drones.
