European countries are capable of independently supporting Ukraine in the war against Russia, even in the event of a complete halt of US military aid, Reuters reports.

Major General Christian Freuding stated that European NATO members, together with Canada, have already surpassed the amount of US military aid provided to Kyiv last year. The aid totals $20 billion.

According to him, Germany accounted for about 60% of the total expenditures borne by Western allies.

The war against Ukraine is raging on our continent, it is also being waged against the European security order. If the political will is there, then the means will also be there to largely compensate for the American support," Freuding said.

Ukraine is currently continuing to receive arms shipments approved by former US President Joe Biden. However, it remains unclear whether his successor, Donald Trump, will authorize any new deliveries.

When asked how long the Biden-approved shipments will meet Kyiv's needs, Freuding responded that it depends on logistical processes as well as the pace at which Ukraine consumes weapons and ammunition. In his opinion, the supplies should last through the summer.

"How the American government handles further requests for military support for Ukraine is unclear at the moment. We can't say anything about that," he added.

US aid to Ukraine

The US State Department recently sent a notification to Congress regarding a license to export weapons to Ukraine worth at least $50 million.

This was the first approved arms sale contract during Trump's presidency. It is worth noting that since his return to the White House, there have been no new military aid packages to Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently said that Ukraine wants to conclude an arms agreement with the US. During his statement, the President mentioned a key detail of this agreement.

Later, the Ukrainian leader provided details on the purchase of weapons from the US. He also noted that Trump likes deals.
