EU’s top diplomat explains why it is important to lift Western restrictions for Armed Forces of Ukraine
Western countries need to lift restrictions on the use of weapons provided to Ukraine. This would help protect Ukrainian civilians, according to EU High Representative Josep Borrell on Twitter (X).
He reminded that Russia has resumed massive shelling of Ukraine. Today's attack was aimed at civilian infrastructure, including a hydroelectric plant, and resulted in casualties.
"Ukraine needs air defense now," Borrell emphasized.
According to the EU High Representative, he will discuss this issue in a meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and the foreign ministers of EU member states on Thursday, August 29.
"I reiterate that lifting restrictions on the use of capabilities against vs the Russian military involved in aggression against Ukraine, in accordance with international law, would strengthen Ukrainian self-defense, safe lives and reduce destruction in Ukraine," he noted.
What preceded it
Today, August 26, Ukraine was subjected to a massive shelling by the Russian army. The attack caused damage to civilian infrastructure.
In particular, there were electricity supply issues in several regions, including Kyiv. According to the Kyiv City Military Administration, air defense intercepted around 20 drones heading towards the capital.
According to the Air Force, the enemy launched a total of 127 missiles and 109 strike drones. Ukrainian defenders destroyed 102 missiles and 99 strike drones.
