EU prepares new sanctions as Trump pushes 100% tariffs on India and China

Brussels plans to approve the 19th package of sanctions against Moscow in the coming days, with the decision expected after a phone call between Ursula von der Leyen and Donald Trump, Bloomberg reports.
According to the media outlet’s sources, the European Union is preparing to present the new sanctions package to member states on Friday, September 19.
After her call with the US President, the European Commission Chief stated that the package would target Russia’s banking, energy, and cryptocurrency sectors.
Pressure from United States
Washington insists that G7 countries impose tariffs of up to 100% on China and India for purchasing Russian oil. The US believes this move would pressure Vladimir Putin into negotiations with Kyiv. However, such a proposal may face resistance in European capitals.
According to sources, Trump repeated during the call his preference for tariffs over sanctions.
New measures and restrictions
The G7 plans to finalize a package of measures against Russia within the next two weeks. These include sanctions on major oil companies and networks that allow Moscow to sell oil to third countries.
The EU is also considering restrictions on several companies in India and China, accused of helping Russia bypass sanctions.
Energy factor
Trump has repeatedly stated that the EU must fully abandon Russian oil. While most countries have already stopped importing via pipelines and seaborne shipments, Hungary and Slovakia continue to resist.
In addition, several EU states still purchase Russian liquefied natural gas. The bloc has pledged to phase out Russian fossil fuels completely by 2027, but von der Leyen wants to accelerate the process.
Frozen assets
The US and EU are also pushing to use about $300 billion in frozen Russian Central Bank assets to support Ukraine. According to Bloomberg, Germany has backed the move.
Previously, the G7 declared that these assets would remain frozen until a peace agreement is reached and Russia pays reparations to Ukraine.
