EU mission to train Ukrainian troops extended for two more years - Borrell
The European Union Training Mission (EUMAM), which provides training for the Ukrainian military, will be extended for another two years, stated EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell during a press conference after a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council.
According to him, Ukrainian troops are currently under great pressure along the entire front line, which has become greater than before the beginning of summer.
"We have to continue providing the Ukrainian Armed Forces with more capacity and to increase our training mission. We will extend the mandate to the EUMAM mission for the next two years," Borrel said.
He added that he hopes for a consensus on this decision in the EU Council.
Training of Ukrainian soldiers in the EU
Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the European Union became actively involved in training Ukrainian military personnel.
The training covers various aspects of military expertise, including tactics, medical training, and the use of modern weaponry. These sessions are conducted according to EU and NATO standards.
As of August, it was reported that EU countries have already trained 60,000 Ukrainian soldiers.
That same month, EU High Representative Josep Borrell announced that EU countries had decided to expand the training mission for Ukraine, with an additional 15,000 soldiers to be trained by the end of the year.
