EU foreign ministers have agreed on a roadmap for easing EU sanctions on Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, stated the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.

"EU Foreign Ministers just agreed on a roadmap to ease the EU sanctions on Syria," she said.

At the same time, Kallas noted that the lifting of sanctions could be reversed "if wrong steps are taken."

The EU plans to lift sanctions against Syria

Yesterday Reuters reported that the European Union may soon suspend sanctions against Syria, particularly those related to energy and transport.

EU's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, previously stated that she hoped to reach a political agreement on easing sanctions during the EU foreign ministers' meeting on December 27.

Sanctions against Syria were mostly directed at the country’s government and its key allies. They were imposed in response to the civil war that began in 2011, human rights violations, suppression of protests, and the use of chemical weapons.

However, European countries have started to restore ties with Syria, especially after the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December.
