EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, stated that EU foreign ministers will meet in Brussels at the end of January. They will discuss the possibility of lifting sanctions on Syria.

Kallas stated that EU foreign ministers will meet in Brussels at the end of January to discuss lifting sanctions on Syria.

"We will work to ensure that we can indeed make a decision on this issue at that time," she said.

It should be recalled that the sanctions imposed on Syria were primarily directed against the country's government and its key allies.

These sanctions were introduced as a response to events related to the civil war that began in 2011, human rights violations, the suppression of protests, and the use of chemical weapons.

However, European countries have now started restoring ties with Syria, as in December, the regime of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad collapsed. Within a few weeks, rebels seized key cities in the country, including the capital, Damascus.
