The European Union may soon suspend sanctions against Syria. In particular, it concerns energy and transportation, Reuters reports.

According to the three diplomats and a document seen by Reuters, the European Union has not yet agreed on whether to ease restrictions on financial transactions with regard to Syria.

EU foreign ministers will discuss the issue tomorrow, January 27, at a meeting in Brussels.

Earlier, the EU diplomat Kaja Kallas said she hoped that a political agreement on easing sanctions could be reached at the meeting.

The sanctions imposed on Syria were mainly aimed at the country's government and its key allies.

They were imposed in response to events related to the civil war that began in 2011, human rights violations, suppression of protests, and the use of chemical weapons.

However, European countries have now begun to re-establish ties with Syria, as the regime of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad fell there in December. In a few weeks, rebels captured key cities in the country, including the capital Damascus.
