EU ambassadors continue discussions on a new sanctions package against Russia, with more than 40 shadow fleet tankers already added to the list, reported Radio Free Europe correspondent Rikard Jozwiak.
According to him, today, EU ambassadors agreed to impose sanctions against:
-
9 individuals/companies involved in adding vessels of the shadow fleet to the blocklist;
-
43 Russian shadow fleet tankers;
-
12 individuals and two entities destabilizing the situation in the EU, including officers of the GRU (Russia's military intelligence service), members of the pro-Kremlin Valdai discussion club, as well as US, French, and Swiss nationals accused of working on Russia's behalf.
EU sanctions against Russia
In October, the European Union officially approved the 19th sanctions package against Russia. The restrictions aim to reduce Kremlin revenues and prevent sanctions evasion through third countries.
In addition, the EU is close to finalizing the 20th package of sanctions against Russia, increasing pressure on the Kremlin and supporting Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Politico reported that the European Union may adopt the 20th package of sanctions against Russia in January. Discussions will begin after the New Year holidays.
One EU official quoted by the outlet said that this is currently not a priority.
Sources said informal discussions on the new sanctions package, especially potential listings, are underway in preparatory bodies, but this is standard preparatory work.
The European Commission may add some Russian shadow fleet tankers to separate sanctions lists if the 20th sanctions package is not adopted before the New Year.
