A series of key negotiations that could determine Ukraine's future is set to take place next week, Barron's reports, citing European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The EU Chief said today that next week will be "crucial" for Ukraine's future. Her statement came on the eve of a phone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

"What is important now is certainly that we push, that things are moving forward, and I think the next week will be crucial on that," Ursula von der Leyen said.

Trump plans to call Zelenskyy and Putin

On May 17, Trump announced his intention to call the Presidents of Russia and Ukraine.

According to Trump, he will speak with both Putin and Zelenskyy tomorrow, May 19. Moreover, the US President expressed hope that these calls will lead to a ceasefire in Ukraine.

The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has already confirmed that a phone conversation is being prepared.

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy's team has already shared its expectations regarding Trump's call with Putin.

In recent days, in a comment to RBC-Ukraine, Mykhailo Samus, Director of the New Geopolitics Research Network, said that joint negotiations between the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, and the United States could turn into a real psychological showdown. However, during the conversation, Samus noted that in this situation, Zelenskyy would be in a more advantageous position.
