EU Commission approves negotiating framework for Ukraine's EU accession, PM says
The European Commission today, March 12, approved the negotiating framework for Ukraine's accession to the European Union, according to a statement by the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal.
"The European Commission has approved the negotiating framework for Ukraine's accession to the European Union! Relevant proposals have been presented to the EU Council," the Prime Minister announces.
Shmyhal notes that Ukraine has come one step closer to starting negotiations and membership in the European Union.
"This step is evidence of Ukraine's achievements, our transformation, and the fact that Ukraine will definitely become an EU member. The priority of our Government is to make this happen as soon as possible," Shmyhal adds.
Preliminary negotiations
In December of last year, the leaders of the European Union countries approved a decision to start negotiations with Ukraine regarding membership in the bloc during a summit.
In fact, preliminary negotiations have not yet begun. For this to happen, among other things, the European Commission needed to formulate the framework conditions.
On February 9, European Commission spokesperson Ana Pisonero stated that the EC would present the framework conditions within the coming weeks.
