EU aims to come up with Russia in ammunition stockpile by 2025 - European Commissioner
The European Union has accelerated the production of shells, and over the next year, it will come up with Russia in production capacity, according to EU Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton.
Breton noted that by the end of this year, the EU plans to reach the level of 1.7 million shells per year, and in 2025 to reach Russia's production capacity, i.e. to produce 2.5 million shells per year.
"We have accelerated the production of ammunition. In March 2023, we were producing 500,000 shells per year in Europe and were already better than the Americans, who were producing only 300,000. But since then, we have doubled this capacity," the EU Commissioner said.
Breton also said that amid tensions with Russia, defense procurement should be increased. He said that Europe should continue to rearm in the coming years.
"This need is shared by many EU member states and can benefit our defense industry. But it must be able to supply weapons to the European army on time," the European Commissioner said.
In early April, the US media reported that Moscow was ahead of Ukraine's allies in the race for ammunition.
