Estonian General Staff on whether Russia can take Chasiv Yar by May 9
Russia's goal to capture the town of Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region by May 9 is not realistic, according to Toomas Väli, Deputy Chief of Operations at the Estonian Defense Forces (EDF) General Staff.
“They will not take it by May 9. Given that they have advanced ten kilometers from Avdiivka, maybe five kilometers at a time, Chasiv Yar is unattainable at this rate of advance,” he said.
Väli noted that it is very difficult to take the entire Chasiv Yar because it is such a slow, systematic battle in urban conditions.
“And taking Avdiivka, or, say, Bakhmut, took several months. So it is unlikely,” he emphasized.
According to him, the direction of the main attack of Russian troops is still coming from Avdiivka and in the Bakhmut direction, intending to reach the borders of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
Väli noted that one of the hottest spots on the front line is the village of Ocheretyne near Bakhmut, where Russian troops managed to break into the Ukrainian defense. He noted that it was an unfortunate accident.
“In the Avdiivka sector, Ocheretyne was a very unfortunate accident, where Ukrainians were rotating their units,” said the representative of the Estonian General Staff.
Fighting for Chasiv Yar
Russian troops are actively trying to capture the town of Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region of Ukraine.
According to Sky News, the capture of Chasiv Yar would open the way for a further offensive by Russian troops deeper into the Donetsk region.
At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the Russians plan to occupy Chasiv Yar by May 9. According to him, if the Ukrainian forces manage to repel the offensive, it will ruin Russia's plans for a full-scale counteroffensive in June.
For now, the city remains under Ukrainian control. However, the fighting for it is very fierce.
On April 27, Nazar Voloshyn, a representative of the Khortytsia operational-strategic group, said that there were no Russian troops in Chasiv Yar.
