Estonia has supported Ukraine’s accession to NATO, calling it the best security guarantee for a country affected by Russian aggression, the German media outlet Tagesschau reports.

“Estonia sees Ukraine’s NATO membership as the best security guarantee for the war-torn country,” said Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur at an informal meeting of EU Ministers in Copenhagen.

In addition, Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovilė Šakalienė emphasized the need to introduce secondary sanctions against Russia.

According to Šakalienė, such restrictions could become the most effective way to cut off financial flows to the government in Moscow and would impact countries that continue to trade with Russia, including China and India.

EU ministers’ meeting in Copenhagen

As previously reported, Denmark, together with the European External Action Service (EEAC), organized an informal meeting of EU foreign and defense ministers. Among the topics will be military support for Ukraine.

The meeting will take place on August 29 and 30.

Ukraine’s accession to NATO

In the fall of 2022, Ukraine officially applied for fast-track NATO membership.

The Alliance itself stressed that Kyiv has the prospect of membership, but during the war, this process is impossible.

US President Donald Trump opposed Ukraine’s accession to the bloc, while Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth called such a prospect unlikely.
