Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has supported a proposal for a ceasefire in the air and at sea between Russia and Ukraine, The Guardian reports.

Erdoğan expressed his support during an online meeting organized by the EU. He emphasized that he supported the call for an air and sea truce made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron. Additionally, media reports suggest that Türkiye is open to discussing the potential deployment of its troops for a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.

“We support the idea of establishing a ceasefire as soon as possible and stopping attacks in the air and at sea as a confidence-building measure between the parties,” said the Turkish President.

Ceasefire proposal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently outlined potential steps to resolve the war. According to the President, this could include the introduction of a ceasefire in the air and at sea. This means ending air attacks and hostilities at sea.

On Monday, March 10, Zelenskyy will visit Saudi Arabia, followed by negotiations between Ukrainian and US delegations in Jeddah on March 11. The Ukrainian delegation will be led by Andriy Yermak, head of the Presidential Office.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi stated that the talks will cover bilateral relations, strategic partnerships, and the path to peace. The meeting in Saudi Arabia will provide an opportunity to further discuss the ceasefire proposal and potentially sign a framework agreement on minerals.
