Encirclement of Kurakhove could deepen as 'fog of war' descends, expert warns
The situation in the area of Kurakhove could soon plunge into the "fog of war," a scenario previously observed with Vuhledar and Selydove, RBC-Ukraine reported in the material titled "No respite for Ukraine: How Russia's winter offensive could play out and what’s next for Kursk front."
According to military expert Vladyslav Seleznov, the Ukrainian army may soon begin rearguard battles to ensure the withdrawal of main forces from Kurakhove.
"There are virtually no options for holding the Kurakhove garrison. If we weigh the importance of saving lives versus holding territory, saving lives should be the priority. The longer we wait, the more complicated logistics become," Seleznov stated.
He also predicts that the situation around Kurakhove could soon be shrouded in the "fog of war," similar to what happened with Vuhledar and Selydove.
"Even deploying significant reinforcements to this area is unlikely to change the situation," he added.
Current situation in Kurakhove
In recent weeks, the situation in the Kurakhove area of the Donetsk region has significantly worsened.
Previously, military-political analyst Oleksandr Kovalenko, speaking to RBC-Ukraine, expressed his view that the Ukrainian Armed Forces might eventually have to withdraw from Kurakhove. However, by that time, Russian forces would be significantly depleted.
Meanwhile, military expert and former SBU officer Ivan Stupak has suggested that the capture of Kurakhove could happen relatively soon. According to him, Russian troops may seize Kurakhove before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump or even earlier.
As of last week, the city was reportedly already 50-60% encircled.
