American billionaire Elon Musk has instructed SpaceX to enter the mobile communications market with a new Starlink-based service. The businessman is currently focused on covering subscribers in the United States, according to the Financial Times.
According to insiders, SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell has already discussed the plan with investors.
She informed them that scenarios are being considered for Starlink’s entry into the retail mobile communications market. Moreover, the company is even exploring the possibility of building its own terrestrial mobile network in the United States.
The idea is currently simple — to sell mobile contracts directly to users. Elon Musk understands that he will have to compete with the three largest US carriers — Verizon Wireless, AT&T, and T-Mobile — but is prepared for it.
Until now, the company has operated under a different model. Starlink has provided high-quality coverage in rural areas. However, the new project involves shifting toward an independent mobile communication service.
The FT notes that this represents one of SpaceX’s largest commercial expansions since Starlink was launched.
The satellite internet service currently operates in more than 150 countries, but Elon Musk aims to reach even more users.
