Today, November 13, eight European countries announced the allocation of $500 million for the purchase of military equipment and ammunition for Ukraine as part of the PURL initiative, according to the North Atlantic Alliance.

Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden will finance a joint defense package that includes the supply of weapons from the United States.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed the allies' decision and emphasized its importance.

"Our Nordic and Baltic Allies are stepping up to fund a further package of critical military equipment for Ukraine. This equipment is extremely important as Ukraine enters the winter months, and deliveries through PURL are flowing into Ukraine. NATO Allies will continue to deliver essential equipment and supplies," he says.

Rutte also stresses that NATO countries will continue to provide Ukraine with everything it needs to defend itself against Russian aggression.

Partners' aid

As recently reported by the Office of the President, contributions from partners to cover the urgent needs of Ukrainian defense under the PURL initiative have already reached $2.82 billion. Thanks to these funds, five packages of American weapons have been assembled.

Additionally, NATO countries plan to provide Ukraine with approximately $60 billion in aid in 2026.

The Alliance also intends to develop cooperation with the Ukrainian defense industry, utilizing its knowledge and experience to strengthen defense capabilities jointly.

PURL

PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) is a US and NATO program that allows Ukraine to receive American weapons at the expense of partner countries that are members of the Alliance.

Ukraine compiles a list of priority weapons needs, and partners jointly finance the purchase of the necessary equipment in the US, which is then delivered to Ukraine.

The PURL mechanism accelerates the delivery of weapons, as purchases are made directly from existing US stocks.

It also enables the most targeted use of resources, focusing on what Ukraine needs right now.
