Russia's Samara region came under a drone attack overnight on August 22, with a strike reported at the Novokuibyshevsk oil refinery, where a fire broke out, according to OSINT channels.
Footage shared on social media captured drones flying overhead and explosions. Flames engulfed the refinery after the strike, and thick, dark gray smoke rose above the facility.
Samara region Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev has not yet confirmed the incident on his Telegram channel.
The Novokuibyshevsk oil refinery has been attacked several times before. RBC-Ukraine last reported a strike on the facility on June 10. Following previous attacks, the refinery was forced to suspend operations on multiple occasions.
The Novokuibyshevsk refinery is one of the largest oil refineries in Russia's Volga region. Located in the Samara region, it is part of Russia's Rosneft oil company. Its design capacity is about 8.8 million tons of crude oil per year.
