On the night of August 6, Russian forces carried out a drone strike targeting the Izmail district in Ukraine’s Odesa region using kamikaze UAVs. The attack damaged gas infrastructure facilities and triggered a fire visible in Romania, according to Digi24.ro and Oleh Kiper, the Odesa regional governor.

What happened overnight

journalists reported receiving 19 emergency calls to number 112 about the fire, caused by the strike on Ukrainian territory. The air raid alert in Romania lasted about 90 minutes.

"At around 1:10 a.m. Kyiv time, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations issued an RO‑Alert for the northern part of Tulcea County, informing citizens about possible airborne debris and advising safety measures," rescue services reported.

Romanian defense ministry systems detected Russian targets in Ukraine near its northern border region—along the Danube River and the Kiliia‑Veche branch.

Following the strike on Ukrainian soil, a fire erupted—causing confusion among local Romanian residents who believed the blaze was nearby.

Reaction in Ukraine

Oleh Kiper confirmed the attack on Izmail district and noted damage to gas infrastructure.

"Despite active work by our air defence forces, there was damage to gas infrastructure. A fire broke out and was extinguished by 7:25 a.m. Our firefighters are now working to release gas from the system," Kiper said.

He clarified that the fire completely destroyed production equipment. Due to damage to a major gas pipeline, 2,500 subscribers have been temporarily cut off.

The emergency response continues at the site, with all relevant agencies working together. Law enforcement is documenting the latest Russian war crime against civilians.

Background on strikes in the Odesa region

Earlier, on the night of August 4, Russian forces attacked Odesa with drones, causing major fires.

The biggest destruction then occurred at the radio market, where dozens of market stalls containing electronics and household appliances burned down.

On July 24, over 30 Russian drones attacked Odesa. The shelling ignited fires at the Pryvoz market and damaged heritage sites in the historic center.

Odesa mayor Hennadii Trukhanov reported that the strike hit the famous Primorskyi Boulevard.
