Drone attack and powerful explosion reported in Russia's Kurchatov, Kursk region
In the Kursk region of Russia, air defense systems were activated overnight on October 12 due to the detection of drones. A loud explosion was reported in the city of Kurchatov amid the air attack, according to Alexei Smirnov, the governor of the Kursk region and local media.
A Russian official stated that there was a threat of drone attacks in the region shortly after midnight local time.
According to the official, air defense forces and resources were alerted to repel a possible attack.
Before this, local Telegram channels in Kursk reported sounds of explosions, presumably due to the operation of air defense systems in the Kursk district and region.
Later that night, reports emerged online of a powerful explosion in Kurchatov. A video captured by surveillance cameras surfaced on the internet, showing a bright flash in the night sky followed by a loud explosion.
Additionally, a local Telegram channel speculated that this could be related to the operation of air defense systems against one or more drones.
Explosions in Russia's Kurchatov
It is worth noting that this is not the first time Russia has reported explosions in Kurchatov due to drone attacks. Meanwhile, Kremlin propaganda spreads falsehoods and various injections regarding the alleged intentions of Ukrainian forces conducting operations in the Kursk region, claiming they aim to take control of the local nuclear power plant located in Kurchatov or to strike it.
One such instance of hostile disinformation occurred on October 3, when Russian propaganda channels and officials began disseminating information about an attack by Ukrainian forces on the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant (NPP).
However, such statements are not accurate. Earlier, Andrii Kovalenko, the head of the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD), emphasized that Ukrainian defenders had not struck the Kursk NPP. According to him, there is no rationale for this.
Additionally, a representative of the CCD pointed out that as evidence, Russians published a video of a fire in the city of Kurchatov, which has nothing to do with an attack on the nuclear power plant.
