Russia claims attack on Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, Ukraine calls it fake
Russia has claimed that Ukraine attempted to strike the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), but this information is false, according to Russian Telegram channels Mash and Shot, as well as statements from Andriy Kovalenko, the head of the Center for Countering Disinformation.
Russian propaganda channels alleged that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had tried to attack the Kursk NPP using a French aerial bomb.
Meanwhile, Shot reported four alleged attempts to strike. Additionally, Russian media claimed that a Ukrainian drone Palianytsia might have been directed towards Kurchatov.
Ukraine's reaction
Kovalenko noted that Russia spreads false information about an attack on the Kursk NPP using HIMARS.
"Of course, no one attacked the NPP, there is no rationale for that. The Russians show some fire in Kurchatov, and there’s a video of an explosion on the ground. What does this have to do with an attack on the NPP? It’s far away. There’s no connection to an attack on the Kursk NPP," explained Kovalennko.
Russian media have different versions of the weapon used in the attack on the Kursk NPP.
Some report rockets, others mention bombs, while some even claimed it was the Palianytsia.
Situation in the Kursk region
It's worth noting that since the beginning of August, Ukraine has been conducting operations in the Kursk region, during which Russian forces are losing control over territories.
Recently, Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), visited the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant. After his visit, he stated that the situation there is serious.
At the same time, Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security Council, mentioned that Russia may be preparing a nuclear provocation at the Kursk or Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plants to blame Ukraine for it.
