When it comes to maintaining oral health, cheese might become your new best friend. A dentist explained the powerful effect this dairy product can have, according to Gloucestershire Live.

Why is cheese good for your teeth?

Dentist Andrej Bozic has discovered that cheese can help prevent tooth decay and improve oral health. In an age where our diets are often dominated by ultra-processed foods like sugary snacks and acidic drinks, maintaining good dental health can seem challenging.

According to the dentist, cheese can be a preventive measure against tooth decay.

"Cheese is more than just a tasty addition to your meal, it's a powerful ally for your teeth," Bozic said.

This product has several properties that contribute to oral health, primarily by increasing saliva production and lowering pH levels.

"Saliva plays a crucial role in maintaining oral health. It helps wash away food particles, neutralizes acids produced by bacteria in the mouth, and provides disease-fighting substances throughout your mouth," the doctor said.

Cheese consumption stimulates the production of saliva, which is your mouth's natural defense against tooth decay and gum disease. Cheese also has the natural ability to lower the pH level in your mouth, creating an environment that is less conducive to the growth of harmful bacteria.

What cheeses to choose

"When you consume foods or drinks that are high in carbohydrates or sugars, bacteria in your mouth break down these substances and produce acid as a byproduct," the dentist said.

This acid can destroy tooth enamel, leading to tooth decay. Cheese helps to neutralize this acid, protecting your teeth from tooth decay.

When it comes to promoting oral health, not all cheeses are beneficial. Choose hard cheeses such as cheddar, Swiss, or gouda, Dr. Bozic advised.
