Could US aid to Ukraine sharply decrease under Trump? Scholz's opinion
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz does not expect a sharp reduction in US aid to Ukraine when Donald Trump becomes President. This is unlikely to happen in the near future, stated Scholz at the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung event.
"I do not expect an immediate reduction in US support for Ukraine in the near future. We will see what happens in the long term," said Scholz.
According to the Chancellor, his opinion is based on Trump's intention to find a resolution to the conflict soon and to discuss it with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
At the same time, Scholz clarified that the resolution of the war should not happen over the heads of the Ukrainians and Europe.
US support for Ukraine
The administration of US President Joe Biden has provided Ukraine with substantial military and financial aid since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. It is currently unclear whether Trump will continue this support.
As reported by the Financial Times, citing sources, Trump intends to keep supplying weapons to Ukrainian defenders.
The elected US President also believes that weapons deliveries to Ukraine after a ceasefire would ensure "peace through strength."
For his part, Trump has acknowledged that, under his leadership, aid to Ukraine might decrease.
