The US State Department believes that President Donald Trump has not yet closed the door on a visit to Kyiv, stated Ian Bateson, the US State Department's official Russian-language spokesperson, in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
According to the State Department's spokesperson, the very fact that Trump did not reject the invitation suggests that the White House chief is considering the idea.
"If Donald Trump didn't say 'no,' it means, of course, that he's thinking about it. The decision is up to him," Bateson said.
At the same time, the State Department acknowledges that security remains the key concern for the US President. Bateson noted that this is an especially sensitive issue for sitting US presidents.
"Of course, he spoke about security. He understands that it could be an issue, especially for sitting presidents of the United States," the State Department representative said.
According to Bateson, Trump received the invitation to Kyiv during a "good meeting" and did not rule out the possibility.
"He received the invitation, it was a good meeting, and he didn't say, 'No, I won't go.' He simply spoke about the situation as it is. So we'll see what happens next," Bateson said.
As previously reported, on July 8, on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, the presidents of Ukraine and the United States held a meeting during which Volodymyr Zelenskyy invited Donald Trump to visit Kyiv.
